Welcome back to the weekly time capsule that is Flashback Friday! As we see the sun setting on September, we look forward to October. And October brings with it our annual Shocktober Marathon! It is the most exciting time of the year, and we’re going to give you a soft push in with a look back at Event Horizon. This episode is from April of 2014 and was part of our Space Exploration Marathon. Arthur, Dalton and Dustin give mixed reactions to the film we’ve simply deemed Hellraiser in Space!

We Board Event Horizon

Event Horizon

For newer listeners, things may feel unfamiliar as the earlier format of the show was a bit different. We start with our synopsis and reviews as always, and then move straight to analysis. Arthur takes us back in time as he discusses the state of horror through the late 80s & 90s. He talks about the diversity within the film. He mentions that the film has a primarily British cast with minority leads. He champions this film as a win because of its somewhat progressive portrayal of minorities in horror film—especially in the late 90s.

Dalton speaks to the sci-fi moral story that plays out here. He brings up societal fears of technology, but also he focuses on technology’s role in society. He cites the sociologist Thorstein Veblen who spoke about technology in industry. Dalton applies Veblen’s ideas to his reading of Event Horizon.

Dustin approaches the film and societal fears from the right. He discusses horror as a conservative genre and he explores the fear of the undiscovered. Where Dalton spoke to the cultural motivation behind technological advancement, Dustin speaks to the societal fear we have of technological advancement.

Following our Analysis we play the weekly game and put together our Desired Sci-Fi Mashups. And we send things hope with a discussion of what has us fired up in pop culture. So, grab your space suits and get ready for takeoff.
