Welcome GoodTrashers to this special edition of the GoodTrash Genrecast where we sit down and talk with the filmmakers behind the locally produced 80s retro-short, The Heroes of the Realm before it heads to next week’s 2016 San Diego Comic-Con!
Heroes of the Realm is a short film featuring a pizza delivery girl who accidentally opens a portal which brings arcade game characters and an evil sorcerer to life.
The synopsis reads:
In a world where magic reigns, one tyrant was the undisputed ruler. But when magic opens a portal to our world, it’s up to a pizza delivery woman to make the most important delivery of her life.
Caleb and Alexandra are joined by the short film’s star Stephen Goodman and director Kyle Roberts to bring us the inside scoop behind the film’s 48 hour production schedule along with their dreams for taking Heroes of the Realm to the mecca of nerd culture, San Diego Comic-Con.
Heroes of the Realm was a short produced as part of the 2015 OKC 48 hour Film Project which is a competition where each team is assigned a genre and then must use a specific character, prop, and line to tell there story. Each film must be delivered no later than 48 hours after the start.
The Heroes of the Realm is particularly surprising thanks to the number of special effects needed to execute the short’s high concept premise. All of the film’s effects including space ships, giant bob-ombs, and disintegrating bad guys were rendered within the 48 hour deadline.
If you’ve got a taste for the 80s video game culture, this is one trip to world of arcades you simply can’t miss.
