April 19, 2024

In the fall of 2014, Arthur, Dalton, Alex, and Dustin hit the 100 episode benchmark. So, to celebrate, each host picked a movie to celebrate the month. Dustin went first, and he got to bring one of his favorite girls to the prom, as he used to say. On episode #100, Alex, Dalton, and Dustin sat down to discuss Mulholland Drive. Lynch’s masterpiece was released 15 years ago this week, in October of 2001. It premiered earlier in 2001 at the Cannes Film Festival where Lynch took home the Best Director prize. He also received an Oscar nomination for his direction. I, Arthur, had hoped Dustin could write a bit of a reflection on Mulholland Drive for the site, but he’s busy working on a doctorate or something. Anyway, consider this post as something of a Throwback Thursday—Flashback Friday’s overlooked cousin.

We take a stroll down Mulholland Drive

For newer listeners, things may feel unfamiliar as the earlier format of the show was a bit different. We start with our synopsis and reviews as always, and then move straight to analysis. Analysis begins this week with Dalton Stuart offering his thoughts on Mulholland Drive. Dalton speaks to the film as a poison love letter to Hollywood. In doing so, he talks about how the film throws back the curtain on the dirt and grime that is Hollywood. Alex builds off of the foundation that Dalton laid and brings up Freud and dream analysis. She then goes into a discussion of feminism in regards to the film.

Finally, Dustin looks at the interpretation of meaning. He breaks out Lynch’s list of clues for deciphering the film. Dalton and Alex try to figure out if they’re relevant or not. Lastly, Dustin addresses a modernist aspect of the film by referencing a particular sequence in the film. After analysis, the show continues with our game. On this episode, the hosts took a trip down nostalgia lane to talk about their favorite WTF GTGC Moments. Then, to end, they talked about what had them Fired Up in Pop Culture.

And there you have it. Dustin, Dalton, and Alex make a strong case for why Mulholland Drive is an important and influential film. But, before things start to make sense, you should hit that play button. And as we creep up on episode 200, we just want to say thank you.
