Exploring Spirited Away

Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved film won the Best Animated Film award at the 2002 Oscar Ceremony, though he declined to attend. The story is a fantastical coming of age adventure focusing on Chihiro. Chihiro gets drawn into a spirit realm, and must escape to save her parents. It’s surreal and transcendental and bonkers.

This week, we’re excited to get Spirited Away to the film analysis table. We discuss the film’s look at capitalism and consumption, the natural order and ecological ideologies, narrative and pacing, and much more as we break down week 2’s champion.
