Paging American Mary

The second feature film from the Canadian directing duo The Soska Sisters is a body horror bonanza with dark comedic undertones. As med student Mary’s bills pile up, she seeks out a way to make some fast cash. In answering a wanted ad to work out a strip club, Mary finds herself in a bizarre situation: stitching up a wounded man for a stack of cash. This draws her into an underground world of black market surgeries and body modifications. But, after she becomes the victim of a tragic assault, Mary takes on a new identity as Bloody Mary.

We’ve discussed bringing this movie to the table a number of times, and we’re excited Bekah chose it for us to discuss.

On this week’s show, we’re talking all about cult films, representation of counter cultures, the gaze, portrayal of sex workers, the Soska Sisters, and much, much more on this fully packed episode of the GenreCast.
