Episode 357 of the GenreCast kicks off our new marathon: Song of Praise! That’s right, all month long, we’re going to be celebrating the star of Parasite, Song Kang-ho. Song’s career has spanned more than two decades, first gaining notoriety in the films of Kim Jee-woon, including The Quiet Family (1998) and The Foul King (2000). While The Quiet Family was on the docket, we opted to go with one of his first leading roles in The Foul King.
Inside the Squared Circle with The Foul King
Kim Jee-woon’s The Foul King is very of a moment with Office Space and Fight Club. This is the story of Dae-ho, a disenfranchised banker, who is bullied by his boss and belittled by his father. One day, Dae-ho stumbles into a gym for wrestlers. He immediately wants to begin training, but the coach won’t allow it. After the coach finds himself in need of a new wrestler, he reaches out to Dae-ho to begin his training. Will Dae-ho become a champion, or will he be pinned and defeated?
We break down our initial reactions to The Foul King, before diving between the ropes to examine the movie’s themes. We talk all about pro wrestling and the inside baseball element at play. Of course, what will become a recurring theme this month, is the film’s take on capitalism. So, grab a chair and setup the table, we’re taking on The Foul King.
