We’re Ready to Bring It On

Peyton Reed’s Bring It On was a star vehicle for the rising Kirsten Dunst and it surrounded her with an ensemble of up and comers, including Jesse Bradford, Eliza Dushku, and Gabrielle Union. The cheerleading cult classic focuses on a squad who realizes all of their routines were lifted from another school.

On this week’s show, we’re taking a look at the film’s approach to race in comparison to other movies of the time. The topic of cultural appropriation and plagiarism comes up. Dalton makes a plea that the film tries subvert certain expectations of the cheerleader character type while also discussing the exploitive nature of extracurricular activities.

Thank you all again so much for helping us choose this month’s picks. And, to bring everything home, we ran a Redemption Round with the four failed finalists and next week, we’ll be discussing The Prestige.
