As September comes to a close, the GenreCast Movie Podcast is ready to head for the stars. We’re back with our four Wachowski’s pick as we talk all about Jupiter Ascending. The critically maligned film from 2015 is textbook Wachowski as it touches on all of the beats and themes the sisters love to focus on.

Touching Down on Jupiter Ascending

Jupiter Jones is your average girl next door type. She cleans rich people’s houses as part of the family business, and dreams of the things she can’t have and the spaces beyond the stars. One day, during a quick cash attempt to harvest her eggs, Jupiter is attacked by aliens, only to be rescued by another type of alien, Channing Tatum, Dog Soldier. Caine whisks Jupiter to the stars where she discovers she’s a member of a royal family that harvests humans to extend the life of the rich. More stuff happens, but that’s the biggest parts of it.

Though Jupiter Ascending got a notorious wrap its release with mostly negative reviews, the film has started to earn a few fans in recent years. This week, we take a microscopic look at a cosmic story and try to discern what it has going on. We talk production, auteurism, identity, ideologies and class as we bring our brand of analysis to Jupiter Ascending.
