This week, we move into the modern era. A few years ago for AntiTrash we discussed Celine Sciamma’s Girlhood. It felt only appropriate that we’d wrap this year’s marathon with her follow up film—one that garnered much acclaim and love—2019’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

04:52 – Quick Portrait of a Lady on Fire Reviews

14:13 – Expanding the Syllabus

1:08:04 – Wrap up and Next Week’s Film

Seaside with Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Celine Sciamma’s 2019 follow up to Girlhood is a grand period piece filled with great sets and beautiful costumes—a setting that is a stark contrast to that of Girlhood. But, it’s still a tale of women trying to understand their place in a world with structures set to hold them back.

As Marianne arrives on a small island with the task of painting the young mistress of the castle, she knows not what to expect. But, over a the course of a couple of weeks, the two women will study each other and connect at a deeper level.

This week, we’re talking all about Orpheus, islands of seclusion, Celine’s underlying meaning, and much, much more.
