Flyleaf delivers high-calorie riffs on Memento Mori

Forming originally under the name Passerby (2002 – 2004), Flyleaf released their self-titled platinum debut album in 2005. The album was a quickly realized crossover hit, scoring themselves tours with bands the likes of Disturbed, Three Days Grace, and Stonesour. More commercial success for Flyleaf followed, including musical appearances on Resident Evil: Extinction, Rock Bandand The Sims 2 expansion pack Teen Style Stuff.

Flyleaf released their second studio album, Memento Mori, in 2009. Memento Mori is generally well-received and occupied a #1 spot on US Billboard Alternative Albums, a #8 on US Billboard 200, and a score of 69 (nice) on Metacritic.

Flyleaf’s sophomore studio album delivers on many of the same fronts their self-titled album did four years earlier. Lead singer Lacey Sturm’s vocals continue to be well-complimented by the band’s aggressive sound, and chunky riffs. Memento Mori features a higher amount of softer, ballad-adjacent tracks which is a departure Flyleaf flirted with in their previous album. We here at the Praisedown believe Flyleaf is at their best when they’re bringing the stank.
