As the Road to 300 retrospective, we’re highlighting a little jaunt from our 3rd Shocktober marathon from 2014. On the surface, this doesn’t seem like a landmark in any way, but it is notable for a couple of reasons. First, it is the second appearance of recurring guest host, our very own Frightful Femme, Kirsten Therkelson. The second note of importance is an upgrade in the sound of the show. Both of those elements lead to the You’re Next episode being very noteworthy.

You’re Next

Kirsten made one appearance previous to You’re Next, when we talked about The Blair Witch Project. She was so much fun that we brought her back again, and a few more times. She even pitched her own column here at GTM, the Frightful Femme. She brings the same smart analysis to the podcast that she does her articles and has proven time and time again to be one of our most thoughtful and entertaining contributors.

In looking at the meta-slasher from Adam Wingard (The Guest), the crew discussed the subversion of tropes, the power dynamics at play, the discussion of class and the formalist techniques utilized.

In this episode, it’s also important to note the drastic upgrade in sound. Previously, we had been using condenser microphones. Condenser Microphones are great for capturing group discussions, but are also limiting in their quality outside of a professionally treated and designed studio space. They tend to capture ALL the noise in the room, including unwanted background sounds like dogs, people, traffic, etc.

So, we got our grubby mitts on a mixer and dynamic mics for a more controlled sound. Afterwards, we only moved forward, upgrading equipment along the way.

Oh, someone’s knocking at the door, we’ll see you tomorrow!
