gremlins 2 analysis post modernism

Producer’s Note: Sorry for the delay, but the unorthodox OKC ice storm left me without power and internet for a few days. Also, the file seemed to have some issues, so I’ve had to salvage it as best I can. We apologize for the mangled nature, but it feels true to the spirit of the Gremlins franchise.

Gremlins 2: Post Modern Theory and the Mogwai

In our very first year, we did a non-traditional Christmas/Holiday marathon. As part of that lineup, we tackled the beloved horror-comedy classic, Gremlins. 8 years later, we revisit the franchise to see if there’s any meat left on the bone.

Billy and Kate now live in NYC. Their small town life, and the Gremlins that tortured them, are miles and years behind them. That is, until Gizmo finds himself at the Clamp Center where Billy works. The two find themselves together again, but soon, Gizmo’s siblings make their own arrival. And they’re looking to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

We dive deep into Post Modernism and pastiche. We talk all about meta narratives, breaking the fourth wall, and how theory has been stuck on Post Modernism for decades now.

Tune in as we wrap up the final entry in this year’s marathon.
