We’re back, talking KJ-52 this week on the Praisedown! Today, Heath and Alex sit down with comedian and trivia host Barrett Austin to discuss:

  • Proper etiquette for dog owners!
  • A game of “Christian Lyrics or Secular Lyrics”!
  • How to preach about spanking non-sexily!

Afterwords, please enjoy a deep dive into KJ-52 and his album Collaborations (2002)!

KJ-52 Skillfully Delivers Fascinating Lyrics

Tampa-based Christian rapper KJ-52 is fairly particular about how his alias is pronounced, as it references the story of Jesus feeding five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish. Eventually, he released the album It’s Pronounced Five-Two (2003), to put this disambiguation to rest. In addition to being a multiple-time Dove award winner, he is known to a wider audience as “that Christian Rapper who beefed with Eminem“.

The crux of this “beef” and more can be found in his 2002 release, Collaborations. KJ-52 showcases a high-level understanding of flow, and well-curated features from Trevor McNevan, Norva Dorsaint, and others. However, we found the themes on Collaboations confusing at best. Do That features a fully borrowed beat from Black Sheep. Later, KJ-52 brags about his dog “[having] sex every night” on Wait for You. Finally, he calls out Eminem in Dear Slim. Subsequently, KJ-52’s tracks addressing Eminem have resulted in not only hate mail and death threats, but also a spot on VH1’s 40 Least Hip-Hop Moments.

Be sure to tune in and enjoy a fun, full review of the album by playing the episode below!
